10 Things I Love About… Having a Child at School

31st October 2016

Tomorrow my little one starts back at school after the holidays and an Inset day, and although I am glad to be getting time to work again and for life to be a bit more organised, I am quite sad that she is going back.

Having a Child at School

We haven’t done tons together, but we have had some lovely days, and as she has been getting more sleep she has been generally very lovely, sweet and fun. So I’ll miss her now she’s back, plus I’m not quite ready for all of the early mornings yet!

So, here are 10 things I love about having a child at school – just in case I miss her too much đŸ˜‰

  1. She’s learning so much! – And it’s amazing to see. I can’t quite believe how quickly her writing has come on, and how well she knows her letters now. She can write ‘mummy’ without copying it, and she keeps writing me the cutest cards, and oh my heart, I love it! She also recognises letters and numbers a lot better now and is starting to recognise words. I know it won’t be long before we can read books together, which I can’t wait for.
  2. I don’t have to feel guilty when I have to work – She always wants me to play with her when we are at home, and I just can’t always. When she’s at school I can at least try to get all my work done before the school day is over, and give her my full attention for a little bit afterwards. Although at the moment she’s so exhausted from school that she’s a rather grumpy bugger as soon as she’s away from her friends.
  3. The routine – I always think I’m someone who doesn’t need a routine, and for a lot of things, I don’t. But I do enjoy the structure of taking her to school every weekday, and then coming home and getting on with work.
  4. I love hearing about what she’s been up to all day – If she does decide to tell me at least! Hearing about what she has been doing with her friends, and what new things she learnt is so, so lovely.
  5. She looks flipping adorable in her school uniform – I bloody made that! (Not the uniform, the child.)
  6. We get a break from each other – We adore each other, but that doesn’t mean we don’t need a break from each other sometimes. I think it’s really good for us to have that time apart, so we can really enjoy being together and want to be together when we are. Though five days at school does sometimes seem a bit much at this age still.
  7. She’s making lots of new friends and talks about them all the time – it’s lovely and I think important for her to have these relationships, and experience all different types of people.
  8. It’s so much easier to make appointments or pop into town – I know that I will be dropping her off before 9am and I can then head into town or anywhere else and get shit done. It makes a big difference when I’m planning things I need to do.
  9. I have to get out and be a bit social every day – most mornings I hate that, but I know that it does me good, and it’s especially important as I work from home.
  10. We can still do things together after school – Ok, at the moment we’re not doing much as she’s so tired, but once she’s more used to it then we can still go to the park or wherever we fancy before dinnertime, as 3.30pm is literally the middle of the afternoon, isn’t it!? It sure as hell felt like the end of the day when I was at school, but nowadays it feels like I’m picking her up as soon as I’ve dropped her off!

And a couple I don’t love….!

  1. The school run! The early mornings, especially now they are becoming darker and colder are horrid. I don’t think I’ll ever be good at them.
  2. She has more of an attitude (she’s a bit like a teenager!) now she’s spending more time with lots of other children. I’m not blaming the other kids, except I am. My child used to be nice to me I swear. She’s so tired and grumpy every day once I’ve picked her up too, which makes homework, and reading and dinnertime not so fun.

Is there anything else that you love (or hate!) about your children being at school? Let me know!

I love my girls being at school….It makes the weekends together so special. x

  2. The biggest thing I loved when the kids were in school was the space to breathe!! I’m homeschooling them for a year and it’s the one thing I am really missing! #TwinklyTuesday

I look forward to these days so much and you’ve given me a good idea of what to expect. I adore my little one too but you can have too much of a good thing so a little, regular space to breathe will be amazing. #TwinklyTuesday

My little boy absolutely loves school, and it’s so amazing to see what he’s been learning even though he’s only in reception. I’ve got to say though, some of the songs they learn are a bit annoying, haha x

I feel a bit guilty about how much I’m looking forward to school (670 days) but the other good thing about school is how lovely it feels when the holidays arrive and you get to spend all that time together #TwinklyTuesday

  6. I start school next September, so cant’t wait to start! My mummy isn’t looking forward to the school run. Some great plus points though! #TwinklyTuesday xx
