We’ve recently got into a bit of a routine with our meals, and despite eating healthy home-cooked meals most evenings, we have got a bit stuck with the same meals over and over again. My daughter has become very fussy over the last year or two and I think we got a bit sick of cooking lovely meals and then she wouldn’t eat them – it was so frustrating every night.
So for a while now, we have somehow ended up cooking mostly the same meals almost on repeat – Spag Bol, risotto, pasta or gnocchi and a homemade sauce, Lasagne or sausages. Whilst they are all lovely, I am a bit bored with them all and I think we’d kind of given up trying to get Ava eating new things, which is a shame. Life as an adult is so busy and tiring though, so it can be hard trying to think of new things to cook every evening and then actually make them, and it’s so easy to get stuck in the same old routine.
I know for me, I can cook but I’m not very experimental and I overthink things when I’m cooking and often making something from a recipe scares me quite a bit. But we are both really into food and trying new things, so it’s a shame that we have got into a routine with meals.
So being asked by Hello Fresh to try one of their boxes came at just the right time for us, to shake up our dinnertimes, and get fresh ideas for our evening meals.
Because of the simplicity of the Hello Fresh recipes, and the clear instructions, I’m happy to make them myself, and it has really helped with getting me back into cooking again and inspired me to do it a lot more often! I love being encouraged to try new recipes and Hello Fresh makes it so simple to do that with their boxes that are delivered to your house.
Hello Fresh subscriptions allow you to receive healthy and fresh ingredients and recipes to your door each week in a chilled recipe box, in a flexible way. I think they are a brilliant way to not only shake up your dinnertime routine, but also to save you time and energy thinking of something to cook for your family every night when you’re tired and uninspired by the contents of your fridge, as I so often am.
The step-by-step recipe cards that you get with your boxes, make it all so clear and easy to follow, and I find the pictures really help me to not become overwhelmed with reading the instructions over and over! Being provided with all of the ingredients in the right quantities also massively helps me, and I can just get on with it, and I have actually started to enjoy the process of cooking for my family again.
There is quite a lot to the recipes, but I love that because it means you get amazing flavours and such tasty, fresh dinners. And the instructions are so clear that they’re easy to get right and create an impressive looking meal easily!
It’s also helping to get me out of the routine of leaving the cooking to my husband! He’s a better cook than me, but he’d still rather not cook every single night. I usually end up carrying on with work or doing some things around the house, but I know he’d like me to make dinner a lot more often, and our HelloFresh box has really helped get me back into it. It’s also helping to make our evening meals a thing to enjoy again, together as a family, rather than something we just have to do.
As I have been inspired to break the routine of the same meals every week for our family, I thought I would share some tips for how to break a routine for anything in your life. I think it can be so easy in life to get stuck doing the same things in the same way, and it’s so good for us to shake things up a bit and try something new or make some little changes, so that we can get some excitement and passion back into our lives, and keep things fresh and interesting. To help us feel better when all we seem to have are those regular days filled with errands to run, bills to pay, and chores to do.
Tips for breaking your routine
Take up a new hobby or learn a new skill
It can be so much fun trying something new and really challenge you and make you feel inspired again. It’s so easy to keep living life on autopilot, but we only get one life, so we should make an effort to really live it and try out new experiences.
Turn off the tv at night
Read a book, or make plans to meet up with friends and do something different one evening. I know at the end of a long and tiring day it can be hard to not just slob in front of Netflix with a glass of wine – but getting ourselves out and spending time with friends in a different environment is so good for us, and always feel good once we make ourselves do it.
Go for a picnic
Pack up a meal and take your food somewhere else to enjoy. Kids love to sit on a blanket on the ground and enjoy the casual fun of eating with their hands on the floor. It’s a simple thing, but can make a lunchtime more fun and break up the mundanity of lunchtimes with children up a bit for you, as well as getting you all outside and spending time chatting and focusing on each other.
Plan a trip or visit a new place
Even if it’s just a cheap night away at a local campsite, it can be really good for you to get away from it all for a short time, and come back feeling more refreshed.
Try a different cuisine
It’s easy to get stuck eating the same foods, especially with a young family. But maybe take your kids out to try Chinese or Thai food for the first time and allow them to explore the different flavours and ingredients. A buffet-type restaurant would be great for this as then they can try whatever they like the look of and it can be more fun for them
Change your schedule
Maybe get up an hour earlier and workout, or switch up your routine so it doesn’t feel so monotonous to you and reinvigorates you for life.
Get out of your comfort zone
Make yourself do something you wouldn’t normally do or push yourself to try something you’ve always wanted to do but have been to scared to. It will make you feel so good and give you more confidence knowing you can do it.
