Taking Time to Relax With a Good Book

8th June 2015

I love reading. I love books. I love getting into a really good story and escaping from real life and getting involved in another world for just a little while. Unfortunately since becoming a mother I haven’t been able to read anywhere near as much. I haven’t taken the time to relax with a really good book for a very long time. There’s always something more important to do and if I get a few minutes spare I will try and get something else crossed off my to do list, and if I read instead I would just feel anxious thinking about all I have to do.

Taking Time To Relax With A Good Book
Of course I could spend my evenings reading instead of watching TV, but I’m always so tired I just want to sit there and mindlessly watch some great television.

Recently though, I’ve realised I really could do with the escapism and getting absorbed in a really good book. I am finding daily life quite stressful at the moment, a never ending to-do list and a few health issues, an impending wedding and a house that just won’t stay clean mean that I am constantly overwhelmed and exhausted. I really need the distraction and relaxation a book can bring. I need to get involved and emotional about someone else’s life for a bit. I need to take the time out, just for me to enjoy reading again, and prioritise it over other small things.

Of course my first choice is always an actual physical book, but since becoming a mum it has just been easier to read books on my kindle, which I love for the convenience and size. My kindle is easy to throw in my bag if I think I might be waiting around in the car at some point, and I can read it in bed at night without turning the light on and disturbing my family.

I have a huge pile of books that I want to read, both real and on the kindle waiting for me and I can’t quite decide where to start. I’m excited to go on our honeymoon in August (apart from for all of the obvious reasons) because I should get lots of time to read in the sunshine. We are hoping that due to lots of late nights in Spain that Ava will embrace the Spanish siesta and we can have some time during the day to just relax by ourselves and I can spend lots of time reading on sunny balconies. I can’t bloody wait.

I am going to write another post soon talking about some books on my reading list that I can’t wait to get started on. I hope it’s not boring for people to read about – but I absolutely love books and reading and I need it in my life again.

Are there any books that you have really loved recently and can recommend? I can add them to my huge list!

I’d love to see a list of books! But yes I am strggling to find time to get into them. I enjoyed The Rosie Project recent;y, nice quirky love story.

    Hi,
I love to read too, but it’s so hard to find the time. I am a bit obsessed with Iris Murdoch, Graham Greene, Evelyn Waugh, Steinbeck, Orwell, etc, and I collect Penguin Classics. I always feel overwhelmed by the number of incredible novels that have been written – they weigh on me like a delicious burden. With so many old books to read, I never even consider reading anything new, so am hopelessly out of touch with modern literature 😀
Good luck getting through some of your list!

I’m the same, watching TV in the evenings but this is kinda time with the hubby. I live in Dubai but am travelling back to England for the summer so hopefully will get a chance to get into a good book or two while I’m staying with family who can keep my son entertained and give me some time!
Will pop back to see your list of books too! I need inspiration!

I know how you feel, only in the last couple months I have been able to spend time reading without feeling guilty I’m not doing other, more important things. I have just finished The Rosie Project, a really funny romance novel. I’m half way through Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn, its one of those can’t put it down type murder mysteries. I hope you have a lovely wedding and enjoy your honeymoon 🙂 xx #TwinklyTuesday

I am a total book addict, so much so that a ban had to be placed on me buying any more as I now own possibly more than I will ever get the time to read. And like you, I’ve found that time for reading disappears when you have a young child and a house to care for. It does get better as they get older (not only are they less dependent on you…but you can set them chores so the housework doesn’t all come down to you!), you do find the time again! I did a “read 50 book in a year” challenge when my oldest was about four, so it isn’t gone for good!

  7. I love reading too but dont have time lately. I am reading a book Urban Sketching but its not fiction. Just something to make my brain go and be creative again. #pocolo
