5 Reasons to Choose Corfu for Your Next Holiday

13th April 2017

I love this time of year; the nights are getting longer, the days are getting warmer, and there’s that anticipation of summer, and holidays and ice creams in the air. Usually in April we mostly get lots of showers with perhaps the odd warm day, but this year we’ve already had lots of lovely weather, and it’s been great.

This year for the first time in many years, we have a family holiday booked (for next month!!!) and we’re all so excited. I absolutely love having something special to look forward to, even if it’s just a small trip away, it helps me to feel more bright and happy. It’s really lovely to talk about it with Ava too, as she really enjoys thinking about what we will do together, and counting down the days until we go.

Despite it only being April, holidays for next year are already being launched, with Villa Plus launching their holidays for 2018 really soon! I think it’s always so exciting to start planning a holiday for you all to look forward to, and to find that perfect destination for you all to dream about. I think it’s so important to have those things to look forward to, especially when life is feeling a bit hard.

I absolutely love spending hours browsing different locations, and accommodation and picturing us there having a wonderful time. I also love choosing a holiday destination that might not be the most popular or touristy so that you might find a hidden gem full of culture and unspoilt beauty.

I have been to Corfu once before and ever since I have wanted to go back again and explore more of the beautiful island. I visited before I became a mother, but Corfu is the perfect place for a family holiday. It is the second largest of the Greek Ionian Islands and one of the most popular. It has a rich culture, beautiful sandy beaches and a wonderful climate, and it only takes a few hours to get there from the UK – perfect for a family trip. Although there are lots more, I thought I would bring together 5 reasons to choose Corfu for your next holiday.

5 reasons to choose Corfu for your next holiday

The beaches

The beaches in Corfu are absolutely stunning, with white sands and the most crystal clear blue and green waters I have ever seen. They are beautiful and vary between quieter little coves, or gorgeous long stretches of coastline. The North East coast of Corfu is one of the most beautiful areas on the island with a winding road that follows the coast from Ipsos to Kassiopi with breathtaking views and plenty of places to stop and admire the scenery or take a dip in the crystal clear waters. It is also a perfect coast to explore by boat.  Nissaki is one of the prettiest little beaches and harbours along the coast, and Agios Stefanos has a beautiful natural harbour and a small shingly beach with lovely walks around the headland to other hidden beaches.

Paleokastritsa

I visited Paleo (it’s nickname!) for a week in my late teens with my boyfriend and it is still one of my favourite ever holidays, and I really hope to go back soon. Yes, it has most likely changed a bit in the last fifteen (yikes!!) years, but it was so beautifully small and quaint and slightly untouched compared to other holiday destinations I had been on, and I adored it. It felt like ‘real’ Greece rather than a tourist hotspot. We ate at wonderful restaurants with friendly waiters, whilst gazing out to sea and enjoying too many carafes of local wine. We lazed on the small but beautiful beach, and sunbathed in the sunshine by our hotel pool. Yes, that hotel now has air conditioning, and there are probably a few more hotels in Paleo, but I would imagine it still retains a lot of that charm and incredible scenery.

The food

I love greek food and mezze in general, but I probably really fell in love with it after I visited Corfu, and dinnertimes were such an important and enjoyable part of our day. Eating out is a way of life here and the food is generally fresh, healthy and delicious. We ate tons of fresh seafood – big tasty mussels, and lobster, olive oil and olives, that are grown on the island, all whilst looking out at the beautiful Ionian sea glistening around us, and it was amazing. It’s also where we discovered and fell for Souvlaki, which is grilled meat cooked on a skewer with lemon – it is so tasty and simple.

The natural beauty and lush green landscape

Corfu is the greenest and lushest island in Greece, with thousands of olive trees. The south is flat but the north has craggy mountains and dramatic coastlines and the whole island is so beautiful. The rich greens of the mountains, and the incredible blues of the sea make it a stunning island to visit.

The weather

Corfu has a wonderful mild climate with a high winter rainfall, which makes for its amazing lush green vegetation. Spring and Autumn are the best times to visit, and conditions are perfect between Easter and mid-June – the weather is pleasantly warm in most places, but not too hot, and then again conditions are ideal from the end of August until mid-October.

Villa Plus have so many beautiful villas on the island of Corfu, with loads of facilities such as pools, and barbeques that make them perfect for families. They really want you to love your holiday and stay in a place that has everything you need and want so you can focus on having a great time with your family. Have a look at this amazing villa in Paleokastritsa – that bath!! I dream of laying there one day, after a day at the beach, with those windows thrown open, and a glass of wine in my hand. Ahhhh, joy.

And oh my goodness, how bloody gorgeous is this villa in Barbati, Corfu?? Can you imagine going away with lots of family or even loads of friends and their kids and staying in this beautiful place with those views?! I wouldn’t want to leave!

As Villa Plus are launching their 2018 holidays soon, it’s the perfect time to get browsing and have something amazing to look forward to. You can book the 2018 holiday of your dreams for only 10% deposit of the villa only price. Corfu has so much you’ll want to explore and having a beautiful villa to come home to at the end of the day will make it so much more enjoyable for everyone – the kids can play, parents can relax with a glass of wine and you can enjoy the incredible surroundings of this Ionian Island.

  3. Thank you for this lovely post Louise, I like Greece. Corfu is one of the most beautiful and cosmopolitan Island in the Mediterranean. Every year it’s visited by thousands of visitors who want to behold the charm and elegance of this Island. Greece is one of the most popular tourist destinations for people all around the world, because of the fact that it has the advantage of combining a rich cultural and historical background with some of the best places of relaxation someone can find.

    Cheers then.
