A Day at the Races // The Dress Code and Style Edit

18th June 2016

As a mother and someone who works from home, I don’t get the chance to dress up very often. So I always get excited when I have a wedding or a posh event to go to so I can spend hours perusing ASOS and Topshop looking for the perfect outfit.

Right now Royal Ascot is happening, so I thought I would put together a few pretty dresses to wear as well as a bit about the dress code – the last thing you want when you’re looking forward to an exciting day out is to not be allowed in because you’ve inadvertently worn a dress with spaghetti straps to the Royal Enclosure.

I think when you’re attending something like Ascot, you should have a bit of fun with your outfit, whilst remaining elegant. It’s not something you’ll attend very often, so make your outfit a bit playful, or accessorize with a giant hat that you’d never normally wear.

Make sure you check out this post from Coast before you make your way there in your beautiful dress: The Ascot Races Dress Code.

Here are my picks for some elegant dresses that are still modern and fun…
A Day at the Races
  1.  This fun tiered dress from Oasis would be great for a day at the races. I love the bright colours and the flattering shape, and it looks like it would be really comfy to wear all day and cool enough if the temperatures soar. Make your outift even more fun with these crazy/amazing/crazy shoes from ASOS Collection. I kind of love them. Glitter and 3D florals? They should look stupid, but I kind of think you could keep them looking classy with a modern, stylish dress like this one and not too many accessories.
  2. Stand out from all of the bright colours at Ascot with this lovely monochrome stripe dress. Bring in a bit of colour whilst staying comfortable and modern with this pretty Johnny Loves Rosie headband.
  3. A pretty floral maxi dress will always look lovely at a summer event, be it a wedding or a day at the races, and this one is such a flattering shape. Particularly as you’ll be wearing a maxi dress, you can get away with wearing a lower heel like these simple, embellished one’s from ASOS. The block heel means you’ll be able to walk easily on the grass without sinking in, and your feet shouldn’t ache too much for being on them all day.
  4. I love this bold River Island midi prom dress – the shape is lovely, and the overlay makes it a bit more interesting. Wear it with some pretty nude sandals like these that you will get loads of wear out of afterwards and you will look super cool and stylish.

Have you been to any posh events where you dress up recently? Or are you going to any soon? I’d love to hear about them!
