With an A-list following, distressed denim is the hottest trend in fashion right now. If you’re looking for a fresh take on this popular trend, why not grab those old jeans and transform them into the must-have wardrobe staple with a spot of DIY? Explaining how you do it is QUIZ, a leading retailer of sequin dresses.
Prepare your jeans
Step away from the scissors! The first step to customising your denim is actually thinking about what you’re going to do.
Your jeans need to be clean and dry. Put the jeans on and work out which areas you want to distress. Pockets, knees and the bum are popular parts to modify, as they are the areas of the jeans that naturally wear and tear. Use chalk to mark out where you want to distress.
Rip them up
This is the fun bit! To make sure you only cut one side of your jeans, stuff a magazine or thick piece of cardboard under the area you will be cutting.
Using a safety knife, cut rips into your jeans, varying their lengths to create a natural look. Loosely aim to create a diamond shape using different-sized cuts.
Once cut, you’ll need to start fraying the rips. Along the edge of each cut, gently tease the horizontal white threads using a safety pin, being careful not to break them. Then, using tweezers, pluck out the vertical threads to leave just the white horizontal threads. Repeat this for each cut you have made.
This next step involves dipping into the tool box! Take a piece of sandpaper and rub it across sections of your jeans. Doing so will create a natural-looking colour fade, perfect for adding the finishing touches to your distressed denim creation.
Patch it up
Make your creation personal with a selection of bold and bright patches. Bright floral motifs are in vogue and practically leap off distressed denim to give you an eye-catching contrast of grunge and chic. If you want a subtle embellishment, why not go with lace? This is a classic feminine fabric that will dress up your modern distressed denim with retro charm for the ideal smart-casual look.
