During the Easter holidays, we were invited to go for lunch at Son of Steak, Nottingham to check out their menu and enjoy a yummy lunch together.

They had come together with Ribena for the school holidays, and brought in an artist to do caricatures of anyone who came in for lunch, which was fun! The lovely lady sat with us and drew Ava whilst we browsed the great menu.

Son of Steak is a pretty new restaurant in Nottingham, in a great location on Trinity Square in the city centre. They do great steak, and focus on the food being really good without all the fuss, and use the best cooking methods and equipment, like their Josper oven – a charcoal-fired grill that smokes and cooks the most delicious and tender steaks.

I absolutely adore steak; it is one of my very favourite foods and I eat it whenever I possibly can, so I was spoilt for choice at Son of Steak. We were treated to A LOT of food and I was in heaven. I thought there was no way we would possibly eat it all but we somehow did – it was that good.

The beef at Son of Steak is exclusively reared on hand-picked British and Irish farms and dry and wet-aged for a full 28 days. It was a tough choice but I went for the Ribeye steak and it was absolutely amazing – it was so tender and perfectly cooked (I have my steak rare because I’m sensible), nice and salty and just so delicious. I was sad when it was finished. We also had their signature steak – the flat-iron to try, which is served sliced and pink, and it was really succulent and tasty. Ava loved it too, and kept stealing it even after finishing her burger!

The kids menu is really great, and has such a good range of stuff. For £5.95 (for under 10’s) they can choose a main, a carb and a veggie side, and then a dessert or a drink. There are six different mains to choose from, and I love that everything doesn’t just automatically come with chips. Ava chose to have mac ‘n’cheese with her burger which made a nice change, or there’s also chips or homemade onion loaf which sounds really interesting! Her burger was so tasty. The veggies are also a bit different – there’s creamed spinach, roast veg, flat mushrooms or raw salad. I love it when places don’t just do the standard things for kids – it makes me so happy when it doesn’t seem like the kids menu just seems like an afterthought. Ava loves a variety of food, and even though the options for veg weren’t ideal for her as she is so fussy with them, she is very good at trying new things, loves steak, and doesn’t just automatically want something with chips, and peas or beans.

She loved going with the waitress to get her ice cream herself and choosing which sauce to have, and she really enjoyed the meal and our whole time there. She was given crayons and an activity sheet to do, which she always loves. We felt really relaxed at Son of Steak, and so we spent a good while there, savouring all the food, and having a lovely time.

Back to the main menu – they do some really special sauces, and we got to try a few of them and my goodness they are good. We tried – Beef Dripping Gravy, Brandy and Peppercorn, Bumbu Bali, and Fiery Bumbu Bali. The gravy was really good and we couldn’t stop dipping chips in it, and the Bumbu Bali sauces, particularly the fiery one, were amazing. They had a sort of thai taste and they were so good with steak and chips. The sauces are a pound each and most definitely worth it. We also got to try some Bumbu Bali chicken which was really moist and tasty as well. All of the food has so much flavour, and is all so fresh and lovely.

The options for side dishes on the main menu is also excellent, and include crushed sweet potato with spicy maple-flavoured syrup and pecan nuts, and Halloumi with Omega sprinkles, which both sound amazing. I think there would be options to suit everyone, and you can choose from one or two sides with your meal. We had the flat mushrooms cooked in garlic butter, which were nice, but could have done with being a bit less watery. The cheesey garlic bread is the only other part of the meal that we weren’t so impressed with – the cheese wasn’t very melted and so it was a bit rubbery (it still all got eaten though!).

Clearly there aren’t loads of options for vegetarians, but the veggie burger (made with chickpeas and butternut squash) does sound lovely, and there are loads of options for sides. Another couple of options for veggies would be nice to see.

The food is brought out in separate dishes, so you have your steak on one plate, and chips in another dish, so it’s a really nice relaxed dining affair, and nice to choose different sides between you and then have a bit of everything. Plus you order at the bar yourself which adds to the chilled atmosphere, and speeds things up a bit if you’re in a hurry.

We were so impressed with the menu and the food at Son of Steak, and I really want to go back again soon. We enjoyed our steaks so much and I think there are really good options at different prices, and all actually very good prices for steaks. The kids menu is brilliant, and it’s a really comfortable place to take kids to and Ava had so much fun. Often by the end of a meal out she can start being a bit of a pain, but she was perfectly happy to sit and dig into all the food and chat with us, whilst doing her wordsearch.

Ava loved having her caricature done with Ribena and was very impressed with the final result, and it was a lovely fun addition to lunch out over the holidays.

I’d love to go back in the evening and have dinner with some mojitos, and it would also be a great place to go with friends or when there is a big group of you. There’s even a good ‘speedy menu’ for when you don’t have long.

We loved it and will definitely be back.

We were invited to review Son of Steak but all words and opinions are my own. See my full disclosure policy here.
