Turning My Current House into My Dream Home

13th August 2019

We have lived in our current home for around ten years now, despite originally intending to stay here for five at the most. That’s just what happens, isn’t it? The time flies, and suddenly you’re still living in the same place with an endless list of DIY jobs to do and still thinking about your dream home.

Turning My Current House into My Dream Home

This house will never really be my dream home – I don’t like the area and I don’t want to live here – but for the near future at least, unless things change, we are stuck here. And so I’ve been thinking about what I would do to it to improve it and make it a happier place to be whilst we are still living here. Some are smaller things, and others would require some proper renovations and building work (and money!), but all of them would really improve my house whilst we live here, as well as make it more saleable.

The first big thing I would do is to knock out the window and wall in our dining room and replace it with some lovely bi-folding doors from Tuffx Glass, who are bespoke glassmakers in the UK and have provided the glass for The Shard and other prestigious buildings. They also provide glass for smaller projects and residential properties. There are loads of benefits of heated glass which is what their bi-folding doors are made from, and they would be great for keeping my old house warm. From the first time we viewed the house we talked about having some doors like this. But unfortunately, as we did up the whole house before we moved in, we just didn’t have the money left to do it.

It would be so lovely to be able to open the doors on those gorgeous summer days, let Ava be able to run in and out freely, and would really open up the room. I would also replace the current floor with some beautiful European Engineered wood flooring that would run right through the dining room into the kitchen.

I would re-paint everywhere as that desperately needs doing, but I would change some of the colours and liven it up a bit. I don’t like the wall colours in our lounge at all now (it’s funny how our tastes can change so much isn’t it?) – so I’d love to change them in particular, and I’m also really bored of the wallpaper in our bedroom, so I’d change that too. I’d love something really bright and fun like one of these floral mural wallpapers. I love the pink jungle one as well as the Cosmos flower – they would make such a change to the usual wallpapers you get.

I would love to convert our small bathroom into a much bigger one by knocking down the wall between the bathroom and the study (my office when I’m not sat at the table), to make a really big, bright bathroom. I would have a shower cubicle, and a big freestanding bath and enough lovely storage to store all my beauty products and toiletries (ah, the dream!).

After that (anyone got any spare cash??) it would be a two-bedroom house instead of three, so it would be great to convert our attic into a third bedroom slash office for me. I would make it really bright by adding three or four windows into the roof – I used to have an attic room when I lived with my mum and step-dad and it was so lovely being high up in a house and having the windows wide open and enjoying the view, and I think it would be a great place for me to escape to and get lots of work done in the bright space. I would also really try and use the space to take my work more seriously and have set office hours.

My garden would get an amazing makeover – I would have decking instead of the paving stones we have now, and I would fill up the borders with beautiful flowers and evergreens. I would have a gorgeous big wicker basket filled with herbs (that I wouldn’t kill for once), and pretty pots with plants in around the patio.

Oh, and seeing as this is trying to make my house into my dream home – I would get a Smeg fridge too. I’ve always wanted one!

Ahh – it’s nice to dream, isn’t it!

Do you ever think about what your dream home would be like? Or do you already have it?

This is a collaborative post.
